HUMMMMM… “Change Your Energy, Change Your Life” is a 4-part teleseries I facilitate.  I became certified to teach this class by my friend, coach and mentor, Frank Mallinder.  Click on his name to learn more about his program.

The Question posed in this article is about how your personal energy affects the success of your network marketing business.  Some of you are shying away right now, feeling as if I am treading into the mystical arena of the metaphysical…getting a little bit wooo-wooo. Not so.  Even in the Bible and other religious books we are taught that what we think affects our actions, our desires, our success.

Think about Christmas…not just any Christmas but your very favorite Christmas.  How do those thoughts, those images created in your mind…how do they make you FEEL?  Happy, right?  Your heart feels warm and fuzzy.  Maybe you feel butterflies in your stomach just recalling that special morning or afternoon or family gathering. I bet you are even smiling.  Notice your energy level.  It’s pretty high, isn’t it?  You are feeling good and you  are sending out great energy…happy energy…joy.

Now. think about a time that was not so joyful.  For me, that memory is when I was told by my parents that we were moving … again. I was a junior in High School, loved this school and I was finally popular.  Just the simple recall of that evening brings tears to my eyes, sadness to my heart, a lump in my throat…a feeling of being out-of-control is on the verge of bursting forth. My energy is low; it’s a sad feeling and it’s radiating through me. I’m not smiling… and if you are doing this exercise along with me…if you are thinking of a time in your life that was not so joyful and happy, you are not smiling either.

One more quick example:  When someone calls you on the telephone, whether you know them or not, you have an immediate emotional response  the moment you answer the phone.  You can tell if you sister is calling with great news, just to chat or with something disturbing to tell you.  You can tell if the person on the other endo of the line is smiling or just going through the motions of reading a tele-marketing script.  How can you do this?  You are picking up their energy.

The exact same thing happens when you are calling prospects, making follow-up calls, touching base with your business leaders … as human beings we are programmed to send and receive feelings…feelings are energy.  Positive energy helps build your network marketing business…it helps insure success!  Negative, low, sad, fearful energy is the opposite..it is picked up by everyone you contact.

Would you rather be in business with Oprah or Jerry Springer?  Ray Romano or Homer Simpson?  You KNOW which you’d choose:  That’s what I’m talkin’about!

So, Question:  does your energy affect your network marketing success.  My answer is a resounding Y-E-S!!  Change your energy – Change your life!

And, what can you do to increase your positive energy…to send out the signals, the feelings, you want to send out..to be perceived as a person to be in businesses with?  We’ll talk about that on Friday!

Being a successful network marketer requires that you be the CEO of your company.  YOUR company is made up of many, many other companies.  Each smaller company under you has a CEO of THEIR company at the helm.  Your company is a smaller company under your host/sponsors company.  All of this is the beauty and the success-formula of the network marketing industry. It is also the beauty and success-formula for every real estate company, McDonald’s Corporation and traditional business.  It is how business is done.

Given that you are the CEO of your business and the business partners in your organization are the CEOs of their businesses, do you tell them the truth?  If a new business partner has an in-home scheduled, you drive two hours to be there and then no one shows up, what do you tell your business leader?  If you say “Oh, that’s OK, it happens to everyone” then you are doing him/her a significant dis-service.  You must tell you network marketing business leaders the truth.

When your network marketing leaders make a mistake, mis-calculate or are moving in the wrong direction, you as the leader have a duty to tell them.  When you don’t tell your leaders the truth, you are not being a good leader. And, you are training your down-line to be weak leaders, as well.  Yes, your team will follow your lead.

What do you tell your network marketing business leaders when you know they are not making the prospecting calls they told you they would?  If you enable them to make their lack of action OK, you are not being a strong leader.  The better choice, in my opinion, is to delve into the fear that kept them from making the calls…did a prospect hang up on them?  did a spouse or family member undermine their sales confidence?  are they allowing an old, self-deprecating thought move to the top of their minds?  What was the cause…knowing the cause allows for a positive response.

What do you tell your network marketing business leaders when no one shows up for their in-home presentation?  Do you pack up your stuff and head for the door or do you use the opportunity to train?  Asking such questions as “how many people did you invite?”;  “when did you last follow-up with those that were invited?”; “how much information did your invited prospects have…too little?  too much?”;  “how can the no-show scenario be avoided in the future?”   Role playing the in-home invitation process may be helpful.  Also, calling those people who did not show, holding them accountable to their promise and res-scheduling with each one is a good and practical use of time. Be honest with your business leaders. You are teaching them to be accountable and to be strong leaders themselves.

Mickie Zada, Coach to the network marketing industry

My coach, mentor and Master Mind partner, Frank Mallinder, has frequently told me  “The only thing consistent in life is change“.  My life is filled with change.  In fact, I currently live in a small town where most of the women my age (50+) have been friends since pre-school. I have no concept of this type of permanency.  I’m quite certain that even those who were born, raised and retire in the same town face change on a regular basis.  My type of change, however, includes having attended over 15 schools from first grade through high school graduation, residence in about 12 States and three major career changes.  Change is a constant in my life…and I love it!

Whether you have lived in one town, on the same block, with the same people… or if you are a vagabond, like me, network marketing accommodates your life.  And it can and will enhance your life.

One of the best things about the network marketing industry is the social network of like-minded people.  Melded into this social network are the advantages and family like qualities of support, encouragement, acceptance and recognition.  I’ve said before that network marketing is like a great big “Cheers” bar…it’s a place where everybody knows your name.  It’s what we are all looking for.

As life changes happen:  kids graduate and/or get married, long-term marriages come to an end, immediate family births and deaths, regular job promotions or displacement, short or long-distance moves.  Whatever change happens in your life, your network marketing business and it’s built-in support are there with you. Nearly as supportive as a church-family, the network marketing industry is designed to provide for and accommodate life’s changes.

When you graduate from high school or college and find it difficult to uncover the job you’d hoped for, your network marketing business is there.  When you move to a new town, or a new State, one quick google search puts you in touch with people in your new area who are affiliated with your network marketing company.  When you retire, or if you are displaced from your long-held employment, your network marketing income will provide alternative income and your Team will provide moral support.  If you are traveling across the Country this Summer I’ll bet you could meet new friends in your network marketing business in every town and city your drive through.

Truly, as a participant in the network marketing industry, you are never alone…unless you wanna be!  Reach out and touch someone where ever you are, whatever you’re doing, in whatever situation Life is providing.  Network marketing is there for you, accommodating your adventures and life changes.

It’s important that you be honest with yourself when you answer this question:
Why did you sign up in your network marketing business?

If your answer is “I don’t know“… well, that’s OK   (for this very instant).

Here’s my suggestion to you if you “think” you don’t know.  Go to a quiet place and settle your mind.  You might even close your eyes, but that isn’t absolutely necessary.  This next instruction is vital to finding your reason:  DO NOT sort or judge the words and ideas that come into your mind.

Now say out-loud “I signed up in my network marketing business to ________________” and say the very first thing that comes to mind.  That is most generally the True Reason.

For network marketing success to be yours it’s imperative that you know why you’re in this industry.  Some people join for health product benefits, some for personal growth, some for social interaction with like-minded individuals….most join for the money.  Every one has a reason and those who are successful in this (or any other) industry know why they are there.

Now you know why you joined your business…how will you make it successful?

If you chose your business for health reasons and taking the products have improved your health, you are a success!  Congratulations!  The next step for you is to decide if you intend to tell others about your health improvements, your success.  Some people are happy just feeling better:  they have no drive to tell others or to build a business helping others feel better, too. Know this one true fact:  Just because the product that made a positive change in your life is a network marketing product does not mean you have to build a business.  It’s absolutely OK to take the products, feel better and live a happy, healthy life…without telling another soul about that product or that business!  You achieved your goal of good health: THAT is SUCCESS!

That is also true for those of you who find that you joined network marketing for personal growth, social interaction or any of the myriad reasons people come into this industry.  Not everyone wants to sell.  That is absolutely OK.  You are a success if you know and achieve what you’re here for.  Does that ring True for you?

For those of you who DO choose to tell others about your product, I strongly encourage you to know WHY you are talking to others.  Is it because YOU want to or is it because your up-line, your friends or your company says you SHOULD.  Mary Kay Ashe (founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics) is famous for saying “don’t should all over yourself!”  If you are attempting to build a network marketing business for any reason other than the fact that YOU WANT TO,  then give yourself permission to S-T-O-P, right now.  If your heart isn’t in it…get out.  It’s not for you…find something that makes your heart sing and spend your time and energy doing that.

I suggest you go through the process outlined above….say to yourself, “I have chosen to build my very own network marketing business because _________________”  Your reason, your motivation, your drive is unique to Y-O-U.  You have chosen to build YOUR business…it is “ME, Incorporated”. It’s not your friends, your spouses, your up-lines business. It is YOUR business.

Network marketing success can be yours….as soon as you are clear about why you’re in the industry.  Following the process above will help you do that!

One more quick thing… HAVE FUN WITH THIS!  You are building your network marketing success, whether it is living a healthier life, enjoying the social interaction and forging new friendships or building a financial empire.

Coaching the network marketing industry

Building a network marketing company is an inside job…it is about what’s happening inside y-o-u.

Think about it.  What do you do to build your business?  You sell products and services, and you interview and invite people to come into your business with you, correct?

I’m going to ask you to do something I bet you’ve never done before.  It is the key to your success, though.  It is an imperative component to creating a profitable now and sustainable residual income in the future.  Make a list of every person you have hosted/sponsored.  Now highlight the ones who are still in your business. Now draw a circle around the one(s) who are serious business builders?   Now, beside each name of those still in your business, including the business builders, write the one or two strong personal qualities you see in that person… and one or two personal qualities that you see are holding each of these persons back.

Second part of the challenge:  Write your name at the top of a second sheet of paper.  Now list your personal strenghts…those things you do well, enjoy doing and that you know attracts others to you….and list your personal weaknesses…those things you are fearful of, that you don’t really enjoy doing, that you procrastinate doing.

What do you notice?  The things on your list, if you are honest in this task, are also the qualities of the people you have attracted to your team.  If your strength is love of learning, you very likely have a Team of people who read the books, listen to the tapes, ask a lot of questions.  If your fear is drawing attention to yourself, if you do your best to slip into the shadows rather than be noticed, your Team is most likely withdrawn as well.

I first learned from John Maxwell and then have heard it over and over and over…you don’t get who your want, you get who you are.

Do you want a Team of leaders?  simple.  Become a leader.  Do you want a Team of people who make twenty prospecting calls a day.  simple.  Make twenty or thirty prospecting calls a day.  Now, here’s the catch:  You actually have to make the calls. Thinking about making the calls, or just saying you made the calls won’t work. No, no, never, never, uh, uh, uh!  If you do that, you’ll have a Team of people who can talk the talk but not walk the walk.   Anyone can SAY they made twenty calls today.  Very few people actually DO.

Here’s another very cool fact.  If you are making three calls a day now, don’t say you’ll make twenty tomorrow. You won’t… and you’ll feel lousy about yourself when you don’t.  And, your Team will pick that up.  If you are making three calls a WEEK right now, then set the goal at five calls this week….one a day for five days.  You can do that.  Then gradually increase.lKnow what will happen?  Your Team will begin gradually making more calls each week.

I encourage you to take the challenge I’ve given in this post.  Evaluate your Team, evaluate yourself and then begin taking baby steps toward your ultimate goal.  You can do it!  Give me a call if you need a little help, encouragement or accountability.

Remember, you don’t get who you want, you get who you are!  Become the person you want on your Team.

Coaching the network marketing industry

I was lucky enough to be in Nashville, TN on Saturday for the CMA Fest.  Of course, we listened to country music all the way there and all the way back…Had a marvelous time, by the way, and heard some amazing music!

One of my coaching clients called me while I was riding in the car and began telling me about how difficult her week had been…some of her appointments were cancelled, one person she thought was a potential business builder decided not to do network marketing, she was having trouble getting people on the phone this week. Have you ever had a week like that?  I know I have!

It would have been easy to help her make excuses and to say it was all OK, but guess what…. it’s life.  And because I just came from a Country Music festival the lyrics from “Sounds Like Life To Me” just keep playing in my head.

In network marketing, as in any sales, we are dealing with people and asking them to make buying decisions.  When we are unsure of ourselves, if we are having a “bad day” (or “bad week”), our prospects know it.  Remember, every person on the face of the Earth is created as transmitters and receivers.  We send out and pick up emotional vibrations 24/7/365.

I suggested to my client, and my suggestion to those of you reading this post…when things are going bad for you, take a break.  Stop making calls, setting appointments, trying to push forward.  If you’re having a “bad day”, take an hour, half a day or even a whole day to get yourself back on-track.

Change your energy… get back to the positive thoughts and positive emotions that people want to hear and be around.

Remember, when your prospects are more excited about being in business with you than they are nervous about learning to build la network marketing business, THEN your business will explode.

You are not going to be at your best every minute of every day. That’s OK.  Take a break, re-group…be ready to get back to it later today or tomorrow.

Life happens. It is what it is.  When it feels like Life is getting to you, it sounds that way to your Team and your prospects.  Take a break.

Coaching for the network marketing industry

Your leadership style, and the confidence you have in your leadership skills, will determine the leadership culture in your company.

I once heard Dr. John Maxwell say that a new church to which he was transferred was full of musicians, because the former Minister was a musician. After just a couple of years the same church was full of leaders, because John Maxwell is a leader.  It’s the Law of Attraction.  We attract who we are, not who we want.  (OH MY!  That was another fact I learned from Dr. Maxwell…and it was not an easy fact for me to accept.)

If you want to build a network marketing Team of strong leaders, become a strong leader.  Become an expert in your field…in your company, your product, your system, your … everything!  Experts are leaders.  Experts know what they are talking about; they speak with confidence and enthusiasm.  No fear is heard in their voices.  Experts exude leadership.

My mentor and coach, Frank Mallinder, often says it requires 10,000 hours of learning to become an expert in any field.  10,000 is a lot of hours!  I decided that the option was to either invest the time and attention, or be a mediocre leader…earn a mediocre income…live a mediocre life.  It was a no-brainer for me… I decided to invest the time and attention.

What about you?  Are you willing to become the strong leader that strong Teams demand?  of course you are!  You are an enthusiastic entrepreneur who believe in the company you have chosen and the products you market.  You have already started becoming an expert… you have already started becoming the leader your top-of-the-line Team expects and demands.  You are not a tow-truck, pulling along the stragglers….let the wannabe’s be where they wanna be.  YOU concentrate of the leaders, the doers, the go-getters like yourself.

Strong network marketing teams demand strong leadership. If you want a team of musicians then be a musician. If you want a team of leaders, become a leader.
